L'Autriche a eu son Vienna Art Orchestra, la France, son Onj et son Paris Jazz Big Band et la Belgique son Brussels Jazz Orchestra; Dorénavant les Pays Bas ont leur Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw qui a accueilli Joshua Redman en 2020 et confie ici la direction d'orchestre au pianiste Jim McNeely.
Au programme, huit compositions de McNeely, dont ce ‘Threnody’ dédié aux victimes du Covid et de la guerre en Ukraine, à cela s'ajoute le classique bondisant, ‘My foolish heart’.
Cet orchestre du Concertgebouw se présente comme un big band aux sections bien marquées (sax, trompettes, trombones) mais bénéficie d'une large palette sonore (cl, fl, bcl) qui engendre un large éventail de solistes. On retrouve ainsi Martijn Vink (ex-Brussels Jazz Orchestra) sur ‘Martijns Thing’; Ilja Reinjngoud (ex Octurn) sur ‘The race to nowhere’, ‘What is this anyway’, ‘Old school’ ou ‘Threnody’; le guitariste Martijn Van Iterson (DVD Tineke Postma, ‘Live in Amsterdam’) sur ‘What is this anyway’; Jan Van Druikren (‘Old school’, ‘Threnody)’; Ruud Breuls au soyeux flugelhorn sur ‘Just trying tome’; Jasper Van Damme, impétueux alto, sur ‘Just trying to smile’ ou ‘Threnody’ ainsi que Marco Kegel qui dynamise ‘My foolish heart’.
Une façon plaisante de revisiter la tradition.
