R.I.P. Mario Pavone (1940 – 2021)

Contrabassist/componist Mario Pavone was een avontuurlijk musicus die actief was in hedendaagse jazz en improvisatie. In de late jaren ‘60 was hij actief op de New Yorkse scene met o.m. Thomas Chapin, Paul Bley en Anthony Braxton. Daarnaast werkte hij ook met trompettisten Steven Bernstein en Dave Douglas, pianist Craig Taborn, e.v.a.

Mario zag het levenslicht in Waterbury (Connecticut) op 11 november 1940. Hij startte pas op 24-jarige leeftijd als contrabassist. Hoofdzakelijk was hij autodidact maar nadat hij zijn ingenieursdiploma behaalde aan de University of Connecticut, nam hij een aantal lessen bij de virtuoze Bertram Turetzky. Toentertijd waren er nog geen basversterkers en dat compenseerde hij met zijn gespierde speelstijl. In 1965 begon hij zijn professionele carrière als musicus. In 1967, nadat hij de begrafenis van John Coltrane bijwoonde, besloot hij om zich enkel nog met muziek bezig te houden. Vanaf dit jaar tot 1968 werkte hij samen met Paul Bley.

In de New Yorkse loft scene musiceerde hij o.m. met trompettist Bill Dixon, Archie Shepp, e.a. In de jaren ’70 richtte hij zijn eigen label Alacra op. In dezelfde periode stichtte hij samen met andere musici uit Connecticut (o.a. Ray Anderson, Pheeroan AkLaff, Gerry Hemingway, Anthony Davis, Mark Helias, Wadada Leo Smith) het Creative Musicians' Improviser’s Forum. In de jaren ’80 nam Mario geregeld op met Bill Dixon voor Soul Note.

Het was in dezelfde periode dat hij een cruciale rol speelde in het legendarische Thomas Chapin Trio (met drummer Michael Sarin). Hij zou van 1980 tot aan het overlijden van Chapin, in februari 1998, zijn muzikale kompaan blijven.

In de jaren ’90 werkte hij veelvuldig samen met Marty Ehrlich, Joshua Redman, Matt Wilson en Peter Madsen.

In 2001 speelde hij met drummer Marcello Pellitteri op het debuutalbum “Trio” (Playscape Recordings) van zijn zoon en gitarist Michael Pavone.

Een ander partner waar hij intens mee musiceerde was gitarist Michael Musillami. Ze namen verschillende platen op voor Michaels Playscape label. Het Musillami/Pavone Quartet met pianist Peter Madsen en drummer Michael Sarin was trouwens in november 2002 te gast tijdens de Jazz’halo Music Days in het Bimhuis Amsterdam en De Werf Brugge.

Op de cd “Street Songs” uit 2014 brengt hij een ode aan de stoop music (straatmuziek uit het multiculturele Waterbury van zijn jeugd). Naast Mario spelen ook Carl Testa, een tweede contrabassist, accordeonist Adam Matlock, trompettist Dave Ballou, drummer Steve Johns, pianist Peter Madsen op dit prachtige album.

Hij was ook betrokken bij de organisatie van het Litchfield Jazz Festival en het Litchfield Summer Jazz Camp.

Mario was ook een schitterend plastisch kunstenaar die veel van zijn eigen platenhoezen ontwierp (o.a. voor "Dialect Trio - Chrome" uit 2017 en "Mario Pavone - Dancer's Tales" uit 1997).

Op 15 mei verloor Mario een zeven jaar lange strijd tegen kanker.

In zijn Downbeat artikel van 4 mei jl. omschrijft Kevin Whitehead de stijl van Mario Pavone als volgt:

“On stage, Mario Pavone doesn’t move like other bass players; his hands follow different routes around the neck. He likes splayed intervals: a low G plus a high B a tenth above it, say. It comes from his visualizing the fingerboard as if standing before it, seeing not just all the note positions, but the various intervals, scales and chords radiating out from and connecting them. He plays with a lot of force.”

"This is a very difficult one. Even knowing it was coming, there is a flood of emotions surrounding Mario's passing. Mario gave me so many opportunities and introduced me to so many people. Thank you for the honor of collaborating and playing music with you. Thank you for believing in me more than I believe in myself. I will miss the hangs, the discussions and planning of new projects but will find solace in the memories of the amazing times we shared. RIP dear brother."

"Wow, I am so saddened over the passing of another hero of modern music. Mario Pavone was a warrior for improvised music and celebrated the results with focus and joy whether a participant or an observer. I made many great records with Mario and this one was particularly momentous.

I also loved hanging, telling stories and laughing with Mario. I loved him and he his beautiful wife Mary and son Michael are family to me.

Mario’s story was inspiring. He came to playing the music by being inspired hearing it. He LOVED the music but especially the commUnity of musicians and everyone who allows this to come to fruition.

I love you Mario and I am grateful for how you enriched my life and my family’s life.
